issued by the Institution and its branches. Of this total, 57 were issued by the Institution proper, 70 by the National Museum, and 4 by the Bureau of American Ethnology. These are distributed, for the most part free, to libraries, scientific and educational establishments and selected individuals throughout the world. It is chiefly through its various series of publications that the Institution carries out its program of "diffusion of knowledge among men".

While most of the Institution's publications are of a technical nature and are of interest chiefly to scientists, the general appendix to the Annual Report of this Board to Congress contains a selection of popular illustrated articles describing recent advances in nearly every branch of science, of a character to attract and instruct the general reader who is interested in keeping up with scientific progress. The demand for the report soon exhausts the edition of 13,000 copies, and many commendatory letters are received from its readers. The scope of the articles is indicated by the following titles, selected from among the 27 articles in the appendix of the 1920 Report issued during the past year:

The habitability of Venus, Mars, and other worlds
Giant suns
Vitamins
Soil acidity
Causes of land and sea oscillations
The horned dinosaurs
Suppression of agricultural pests by birds
The sense of insects
Effect of the relative length of day and night on flowering and fruiting of plants
Fire worship of the Hopi Indians
The Ralph Cross Johnson Collection in the National Gallery of Art.

Another popular publication is the brochure describing and illustrating the explorations and field-work undertaken or participated in during the year by the Institution and its branches.
