were shipped to the Michigan Art Institute at Detroit for its exhibit of August 31 to September 9, and have since been shown at Nashville, Tenn., Kansas City, Mo., Peoria, Ill., and Memphis, Tenn.

In October, there was a special exhibit in the Gallery of a collection of nine paintings by the Tuscan artists, Francesco Gioli (1846-1922) and Luigi Gioli. These were lent by the Royal Embassy of Italy.

Announcement of the death of Ralph Cross Johnson, Esquire, on July 9, 1923, came as a great surprise and is deeply regretted. Mr. Johnson's gift to the Gallery of twenty-four masterpieces of the foremost European artists is regarded as one of the richest contributions ever made to the art treasures of the nation.

Since its opening on May first, and until November thirtieth, the Gallery has been visited by a total of 80,925 persons. Of these visitors, 304 came to work in the Study Room or to see objects in storage; 24 came to copy objects in the collections, and 5 brought in objects of their own for identification.

The Gallery has recently acquired a Chinese bronze libation cup of the Chou dynasty (1122 to 255 B.C.) which seems to be the finest one of its kind now known to exist. It is now on exhibition in the West Corridor. In addition, 42 volumes of books have been added to the library.

The account of the expedition to China is given under "Expeditions."
