half-interest in his farm, subject to a life estate of his daughter and her son. The attorney in Texas who had been consulted has recommended that the property be held for future disposition. No formal action was taken.

ROEBLING DEED OF GIFT.

The Acting Secretary explained that the Board had been informed at the December meeting of Mr. John A. Roebling's gifts of a collection of minerals made by his father, Colonel Washington A. Roebling, and of a proposed endowment of $150,000 for its maintenance. He had now to report that the deed of gift had been prepared, and that it was expected that the endowment would soon be received.

SMITHSONIAN SCIENTIFIC SERIES.

The Acting Secretary reported that pursuant to authorization, a contract had been entered into with the Smithsonian Series Corporation by which the Institution agrees to prepare manuscripts and illustrations for a series of 20 books of interesting character to be printed and sold by subscription by the said Corporation. The Institution will receive ten per cent. royalty on the gross sales; and this bids fair to add considerably to its income as well as to diffuse knowledge.
