THE CHARLES D. WALCOTT BEQUEST.

The Acting Secretary read the following extracts from the Will of the late Secretary, dated June 8, 1922:-

"ITEM IV: I give and bequeath to the Smithsonian Institution, of Washington, District of Columbia, an establishment organized and existing under and by virtue of the laws of the United States, the sum of Fifty thousand dollars ($50,000.00), or the equivalent in securities, at the discretion of my executors, the net income from which is to be paid to my daughter, Helen B. Walcott, during her life; on her decease, this fund is to be transferred to the Charles D. and Mary Vaux Walcott Research Fund, and become a part thereof, and be treated in the same manner as the original donation to that Fund.

"ITEM VI:  All the rest, residue and remainder of my estate, both real and personal, I give, devise and bequeath to my son, Sidney Stevens Walcott absolutely and in fee simple. If, however, at the time of my death there shall be no descentants of mine surviving me, I give, devise and bequeath absolutely and in fee simple all the rest, residue and remainder of my estate, both real and personal, to the Smithsonian Institution, of Washington, District of Columbia; in trust, however, to pay over the net income of the same to my wife during the terms of her life, and upon her death, to add the whole of said rest, residue and remainder to my estate, both real and personal, to the Charles D. and Mary Vaux Walcott Research Fund of said Institution and to be treated in the same manner as the original donation to that Fund.

"ITEM VII: If at the time of my death neither my wife nor descendants of mine shall survive me, then I give, devise and bequeath all of my property, both real and personal, to the Smithsonian Institution, to be by it held and become a part of the Charles D. and Mary Vaux Walcott Research Fund and to be treated in the same manner as the original donation to that Fund."
