VACANCY IN EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE.

Mr. Delano stated that a vacancy existed in the membership of the Executive Committee, and offered the following resolution, which was adopted:-

RESOLVED; That Dr. John C. Merriam be elected a member of the Executive Committee of the Board of Regents of the Smithsonian Institution.

WALCOTT MEMORIAL MEETING.

The Active Secretary reported that at the meeting of December 8, 1927, the Executive Committee reported that with the aid of the Acting Secretary and the Assistant Secretary, arrangements had been made for a Memorial Meeting to Dr. Walcott, to be held in the auditorium of the National Museum on Tuesday, January 24, 1928, at 11.00 o'clock A.M., with the Chancellor presiding.

Invitations to this meeting have been sent to a large list of persons. Addresses will be delivered by Dr. John C. Merriam, of the Carnegie Institution, Dr. Joseph S. Ames, of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, Dr. George Otis Smith, of the United States Geological Survey, and Dr. Charles G. Abbot, of the Smithsonian Institution and the National Academy of Sciences.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS.

The Acting Secretary said that acknowledgments had been received from Mrs. Henry White of the action taken in regard to Mr. White's death, and also from the family of Mr. Choate.  Mr. Sidney S. Walcott had likewise written to acknowledge the resolutions accepting the bequest of his father, the late Secretary, Dr. Charles D. Walcott.

CANFIELD BEQUESTS.

The Board's attention was recalled to the fact that Mr. Frederick A. Canfield, of New Jersey, left his exceedingly valuable collection of minerals to this Institution, with an endowment of $50,000 for its maintenance and
