both in good will and in actual grants from the profits of the whole business of Research Corporation, and since the whole profits of Research Corporation must by its charger go to promote essentially the same objects as those of the Smithsonian Institution, it appears to your Secretary that Research Corporation's offer should be accepted.

After discussion the Board referred the matter to the Permanent Committee with authority to employ counsel, to determine the best course of action, and to report recommendations to the Board at its next meeting.

[[underline]] Assistant to Dr. Wetmore [[/underline]]

Referring to the need for an assistant to Dr. Wetmore as mentioned by the Secretary, Mr. Johnson offered the following resolution, which was adopted:

RESOLVED; That the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution be authorized to employ an administrative assistant to the Assistant Secretary in Charge of the National Museum, as a salary not to exceed Six thousand dollars per annum.

[[underline]] Loss of Members of the Staff through Compulsory Retirement [[/underline]]

Referring to the Secretary's statement in reference to the loss of members of the staff on August 20, 1930, under the interpretation of the Retirement Act by the Civil Service Commission, Dr. Merriam offered the following resolution, which was adopted:-

RESOLVED; That the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution be authorized to consider with the members of the Board most advantageously situated with reference to the handling of legislative problems the question of initiating such legislation as would secure exemption from the operation of the retirement act of such members of the Smithsonian staff as may be needed for furtherance of research work beyond the period of normal retirement.

[[underline]] The Harriman Alaskan Library [[/underline]]

The Secretary announced the receipt of $3500 from Mrs. E.H. Harriman, to be applied to the purchase of the William Healy Dall library for presentation to the Institution under the title, "The Harriman Alaskan Library". This gift had been acknowledged by the Secretary, but he thought some action by the Board would be appropriate. After remarks, the following resolution was adopted:
