as Chief Justice of the United States, stating that this action automatically terminated his service as a Regent and consequently as Chancellor of the Institution. 

The following resolutions were then adopted:-

RESOLVED; That the Board of Regents of the Smithsonian Institution has learned with deep regret of the illness and consequent resignation of its Chancellor, the Honorable William Howard Taft, from the office of Chief Justice of the United States, thereby automatically severing his connection with this Board;

RESOLVED; That the Board hereby expresses its deep sense of the great service rendered by Mr. Taft to the Smithsonian Institution, and of the loss in counsel and in association which his departure entails;

RESOLVED; That a copy of these resolutions be communicated to Mr. Taft.

The Secretary further stated that on December 19, 1929, the Speaker of the House had reappointed as Regents - Representatives Albert Johnson, R. Walton Moore, and Robert Luce. 

MINUTES OF ANNUAL MEETING OF DECEMBER 12, 1929.

These minutes had already been submitted to the Regents in type-written form, and on motion were approved. 

BUILDING PROGRAM.

The Secretary recalled to the Regents that at the last annual meeting their attention had been drawn to the Building Program of the Institution, comprising the addition of wings to the present Natural History Building at an estimated cost of $6,500,000; and he would now ask Dr. Wetmore to speak further on the subject. 

Dr. Wetmore exhibited blue prints of the proposed additions, and said that the question was before the Institution as to whether the contemplated program could be considered as a part of the general scheme of improvements adopted by the Government. Senator Smoot remarked that that was a matter to be decided by the Public Buildings Commission, of which he was Chairman. After further discussion, the Senator said he would call a meeting of the
