In the discussion which ensued fear was express that Congress would not favorably consider the proposed amendment, Mr. Luce stating that he had conferred with Mr. Lehlbach on the subject, who was reluctant to accept any such proposition. Senator Swanson suggested that the Secretary submit to Congress the names of the Smithsonian employees for whom exceptions were desired and special action could be taken, which suggestion the Board approved.

PROGRESS OF RESEARCHES.

The Secretary spoke of the work of the new Division of Radiation and Organisms, adding that he had just escorted Mr. Delano to the Smithsonian tower and basement in which these studies are being carried on.

Dr. Wetmore then told of the expeditions of various Museum specialists to different localities in connection with the research work of the National Museum.

VOLUME V OF THE NORTH AMERICAN WILD FLOWERS.

The Secretary exhibited a copy of Volume V of this work, recently published, which completes the series, containing altogether 400 plates. 

In this connection, the Secretary spoke of the visit to the Institution of General Smuts, and of the presentation to him by Mr. and Mrs. John A. Roebling of a full set of the deluxe edition of this work. The General, being himself a botanist, was greatly pleased with the gift which he requested to be sent to his steamer in New York in order that he might examine the books on his homeward trip.
