CHANGES IN THE MEMBERSHIP OF THE BOARD.

The Secretary said that the appointment of Mr. Charles Evans Hughes as Chief Justice of the United States takes him from the list of "citizen" regents who are appointed for six years, and constitutes him under the law as [[underlined]] ex officio [[/underlined]] regent with a life tenure.

ELECTION OF CHANCELLOR.

The Secretary said that a vacancy existed in the office of Chancellor and stated that the act establishing the Smithsonian Institution (Section 5582 of R.S. Title LXXIII) provides that -

"The regents shall meet in the city of Washington and elect one of their number as chancellor, who shall be the presiding officer of the Board of Regents, and called the Chancellor of the Smithsonian Institution."

The following resolution was offered by Mr. Delano, and unanimously adopted:

RESOLVED; That the Board of Regents of the Smithsonian Institution hereby elects the Honorable Charles Evans Hughes, Chief Justice of the United States, as Chancellor of the Institution.

The Chancellor then took the chair, expressing his appreciation of the honor done him.

MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF FEBRUARY 13, 1930.

The Secretary stated that the minutes of this meeting had been supplied in type-written form to the Regents, and certain suggested changes had been made in them before being out in permanent form.

On motion, the minutes were approved.
