VACANIES IN THE BOARD OF REGENTS.

The Secretary stated that three vacancies existed in the "citizen" class of Regents owing to -

The appointment of Mr. Hughes as Chief Justice;

The election of Mr.Morrow as a Senator; and

The expiration of the term of Mr. Brookings on January 6, 1931.

The terms of Representative Albert Johnson, R. Walton Moore, and Robert Luce will expire on March 3; but under the wording of the law they can serve as Regents until December 23, 1931.
A very general discussion ensued in regards to possible candidates for the vacancies, and the matter was left for further consideration by the Board.

FUNDS FOR PUBLICATIONS.

After quoting the resolution adopted by the Board on February 14, 1929, as follows:-

RESOLVED; That the Board of Regents learns with pleasure of the favorable prospects of the Smithsonian Scientific Series, and approves the recommendation of the Secretary that the financial returns therefrom be treated one-fourth as disposable income and three-fourths as permanent endowment:-

the Secretary described the present emergency in regards to the lack of funds for the printing of important works, including new editions of the Physical Tables, the Meteorological Tables, and the Mathematical Tables.

After inquiries, Senator Robinson offered the following resolution, which was adopted:-

RESOLVED; That owing to special exigencies of publication of several important costly works at this time, the sum of Ten thousand dollars be transferred from the Endowment Account to the Income Account of receipts from the Smithsonian Scientific Series.
