of the terms of certain Members with this meeting, the following resolution was adopted:

RESOLVED; That the Commission recommend to the Board of Regents the re-election for the succeeding term of four years of the following members:- Mr .James E. Fraser, Joseph H. Gest, Frank J. Mather,Jr.,and Edmund C. Tarbell.

The Chairman announced the death of the following members of the Commission - Mr. James Parmelee, on April 19,1931; Mr. Daniel Chester French, on October 7, 1931; and Mr. W. K. Bixby, on October 29, 1931. After discussion, it was voted to recommend to the Board of Regents as the successors of the deceased Members, the following - Colonel George B. McClellan to succeed Mr. Bixby; Mr. Thomas Cochran to succeed Mr. Parmelee; and Mr.Paul Manship to succeed Mr. French.

The Commission, as a Committee of the Whole, viewed the paintings listed in the Report of the Secretary of the Commission, and, after consideration, accepted the following:-

Portrait of Henry Ward Ranger, By Alphonse Jongers, N.A. Presented by James E. Fraser.

Framed oil painting by Emanuel Leutze (1816-1868) being the sketch from which he made the fresco in the Capitol Building at Washington, D.C., known as "Westward the Course of Empire Takes Its Way", and presented to William H. Seward by the Artist. Bequest of Miss Sara Carr Upton.

(This was accepted on condition that it shall not be hung in the National Gallery of Art until it has been newly framed).

The Commission adjourned at 12.30 o'clock P.M.

On motion, the Board of Regents accepted the Report, and adopted the following resolutions:-

RESOLVED; That the Board of Regents of the Smithsonian Institution hereby approves the recommendation of the National Gallery of Art Commission that James E. Fraser, J.H.Gest, F.J.Mather, Jr., and E.C.Tarbell, be re-elected as Members of the Commission for the ensuing term of four years, their present terms having expired.

RESOLVED; That the Board of Regents of the Smithsonian Institution hereby approves the recommendation of the National Gallery of Art Commission that the three vacancies in the Commission caused by the death of Members,
