Forenoon: Accompanied digging parties to rise of ground between lagoons; under shadow of and beside red rocks.

  Capt and one of sailors assisting helped with getting land shells; Capt also got a centipede. A great many snakes were [[pushed?]] among rocks, grass and brush but sailors were a little leary about grabbing them. If anything the officers were more shy than sailors by, inhibitions not with standing in the couple of days at James the crew got me two striped snakes, five, large, and well fed appearing specimens. A lot of digging was done, on site Callaghan had started to excavate.
