230 THE CONVENTION TEACHER

ton does not contain the whole truth, men sometimes refer to him as one who never told a lie. I question the veracity of such a statement. Had we received a biography of Washington from a man inspired of God to write, we certainly would have heard of more than the cherry tree.

Light No. 2. The record of Abraham's life seems to reveal that though God had called Abram to leave the Ur of the Chaldees, his father Terah went along on his way to Canaan but reached Haran only. This shows that God had intended to deal with Abram who later became Abraham, and not to deal with the father Terah.

Light No. 3. After leaving his father Terah, Abram continued his journey, taking along his nephew Lot, but it seems that God still did not give all His promises are revelation to His called patriarch until even Lot had stepped aside. To deal greatly with God, a man must face God by himself.

Light No. 4. The biography of Abraham was both historic and prophetic. It tells of the things which occurred during the life of this great father and then predicts the incidents of the future as it related to his off-springs. God gave to Abraham some biography of his off-spring even before this man was a father by his wife Sarai or Sarah. These tings were passed traditionally to Moses who was first to write a general record of the happening of the world in the first days.

Editorial Reflections
BY REV. S. A. PLEASANTS, D. D.

Here we have the going out of Terah, the father of Abraham. With him are Abram, Sarai, and Lot. They left Ur of the Chaldees to go into the land of Canaan. They came and dwelt in Haran. Abram's father Terah died in Haran. The Lord called Abram and told him to get out of his country, leave his kindred, his father's house and go into a land that He would show him.

He promised him He would make of him a great nation, bless him, and make his name great. He told him to be a blessing. I will bless them that bless thee, and curse them that curse thee. In obedience to the command of our Father, Abraham left all and as commanded went on his journey with his wife, the souls, and substance that he gathered in Haran. Lot went with him. Men of faith never ask our Father any questions, but do as He says. When one moves by faith God always gives him the object of faith, thus the reality is realized.

All His promises are true, and day by day the men of faith come into the full realization of who God is, and what He can, and does do. To have this history given by revelation to us makes us all who are sons of faith get closer to Him, the giver of the faith that came from our Father to Abram. The same kind of command to Abram in ancient times comes to His church in modern times, which is to the man filled with the Holy Spirit, a fact that the same One with Abram in the long ago, is the same One, who spoke through Paul as to the church in his day which is passed on to us. Whether ancient or modern, the church that Christ Jesus heads, is one and the same in every age.

God appears to Abram in his ninety-ninth year, and commanded him to walk before Him and be perfect. This command came to Abram; after God had prepared him to walk before Him and be perfect. It is, has been and always will be after God prepares one for what He wants him to be and do. All the time when the command comes, the necessary preparation on God's part has been done.

God makes His covenant with those He has prepared to carry it out, as He did here. When Abram was in a condition and position to receive the covenant, the Lord said to him, Thou shalt be the father of a multitude of nations, and thy name shall be Abraham, for the father of a multitude of nations have I made thee. Kings shall come out of thee, and I will establish my covenant between me and thee, and thy seed after thee throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant to be God unto thee and to thy seed after thee.

And I will give unto thee and to thy seed after thee, the land of thy sojournings, all the land of Canaan for an everlasting possession: And I will be thy God.

Abraham believed all that our Father said unto Him. Believing it, so as to make it a reality that had been already accomplished. All that God said to him, came to pass exactly like He said, as the ages passed on.

AUTHORIZED VERSION

20 And when thy son asketh thee in time to come, saying, What mean the testimonies, and the statutes, and the judgments, which the Lord our God hath commanded you?

21 Then thou shalt say unto thy son, We were Pharaoh's bondmen in Egypt; and the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand:

22 And the Lord showed signs and wonders, great and sore, upon Egypt, upon Pharaoh, and upon all his household, before our eyes:

23 And he brought us out from thence, that he might bring us in, to give us the land which he sware unto our fathers.

24 And the Lord commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the Lord our God, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive as it is at this day.

25 And it shall be our righteousness, if we observe to do all these commandments before the Lord our God, as he hath commanded us.

9 And when ye reap the harvest of your land, thou shalt not wholly reap the corners of thy field, neither shalt thou gather the gleanings of thy harvest.

10 And thou shalt not glean thy vineyard, neither shalt thou gather every grape of thy vineyard; thou shalt leave them for the poor and stranger: I am the Lord your God.

11 Ye shall not steal, neither deal falsely, neither lie one to another.

12 And ye shall not swear by my name falsely, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am the Lord.

13 Thou shalt not defraud thy neighbor, neither rob him: the wages of him that is hired shall not abide with thee all night until the morning.

14 Thou shalt not curse the deaf, nor put a stumblingblock before the blind, but shalt fear thy God: I am the Lord.

17 Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thine heart: thou shalt in any wise rebuke thy neighbor, and not suffer sin upon him.

18 Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself: I am the Lord.

REVISED VERSION

20 When thy son asketh thee in time to come, saying, What mean the testimonies, and the statutes, and the ordinances, which Jehovah our God hath commanded you? 21 then thou shalt say unto thy son, We were Pharaoh's bondmen in Egypt: and Jehovah brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand; 22 and Jehovah showed signs and wonders, great and sore, upon Egypt, upon Pharaoh, and upon all his house, before our eyes; 23 and he brought us out from thence, that he might bring us in, to give us the land which he sware unto our fathers. 24 And Jehovah commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear Jehovah our God, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as at this day. 25 And it shall be righteousness unto us, if we observe to do all this commandment before Jehovah our God, as he hath commanded us.

9 And when ye reap the harvest of your land, thou shalt not wholly reap the corners of thy field, neither shalt thou gather the gleaning of thy harvest. 10 And thou shalt not glean thy vineyard, neither shalt thou gather the fallen fruit of thy vineyard; thou shalt leave them for the poor and for the sojourner: I am Jehovah your God.

11 Ye shall not steal, neither shall ye deal falsely, nor lie one to another. 12 And ye shall not swear by my name falsely, and profane the name of thy God: I am Jehovah.

13 Thou shalt not oppress thy neighbor, nor rob him: the wages of a hired servant shall not abide with thee all night until the morning. 14 Thou shalt not curse the deaf, nor put a stumblingblock before the blind; but thou shalt fear thy God: I am Jehovah.

17 Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thy heart: thou shalt surely rebuke thy neighbor, and not bear sin because of him. 18 Thou shalt not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people; but thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself: I am Jehovah.
