This agreement made and entered into between R. M. Abbott Agt for Thomas Ruffin of the state of N. C. and county of Rockingham
 
The said Abbott doth hereby [[strikethrough]] show [[/strikethrough]] agree with the following Freed men to wit to Labor on a farm in said county. 
The said Abbott agrees to furnish teems & tools necessary for the cultivation of the farm and to furnish house room and fuel and each family a small garden spot not exceeding a half-Acre of ground. and also to give one third of every thing they make and secure of the grain Crop and rufage and one third of the net proceeds of the Tobacco Crop after having been first in market in the Judgment of the said Ruffin or his Agt at ^[[the]] most Profitable time for both parties and this third is to ^[[be]] Equally divided between the said hands above named. The said Abbott agrees to furnish the said Laborers with meat and grain at the current prices of the neighborhood to be paid for out of their Part of the Crop before I am due [[strikethrough]] them anything or before any other debts of which they may be liable
