Martin's Lime Kiln,
Stokes Co. April 6, 1868.

To Maj. Gen. Miles.
My dear Sir:  I am requested by J. J. Martin, Esq. to say that while he is anxious to serve the Bureau, yet he is in the field as a candidate for the Senate, and cannot find time to attend to the business, as requested by Capt. Hildebrand.  I am now at Mr. Martin's house, and feel sure his statement is correct.  He has done more for the colored people of Stokes than any man in the County.  William Shaffer, Esq. of Martin's Lime Kiln, has time to attend to this business.  I write this in the hope that Mr. Martin may not be ordered to Raleigh in the event he should
