Colonel:

I have the honor herewith to report that on May 29" 1868, by my order, the Sherriff of Jackson County arrested, and brought to the court house at Webster, for examination, Burton Allen, Wm Davis, Wm P. Allman, John Allman, James Common, freedman, and A. K. Gibson. They were charged with breaking open the jail in Webster, on the night of the 28" of April, taking from there a freedman named Henry Matthews, who had been confined on charge of stealing a pistol. They beat him severely, turned him loose, and drove him from town, throwing rocks, and beating him as he ran. Other parties than the above mentioned are said to be implicated in the outrage, who were temporarily absent, and for this reason the above named parties were released on their personal recognizance to appear when called for.
