Altho' the Election went off quietly, (: I am confident only because of the wise and prompt measures taken by the General Commanding this State District :), since the Election everything seems to have changed.

The unreconstructed rebels, not satisfied with the too mild measures adopted by the U.S. Government which mercyfully pardoned them for their crimes, and neither respecting nor fearing the Laws enacted by the State Legislature (: if they can get around them :) are now giving vent to their abominable hatred and desire of revenge, not to the Government directly because these Miscreants dare not, but to the poor ignorant freed people who nursed and cared for them when their slaves and who toiled and fed their families when there were away from home engaged in rebellion against their Government.
