This Indenture made and executed on this the [[blank space]] day of 1869 between

of the first part, and S.C. Alexander, William Howser and John C. Schenck, all of the county of Mecklenburg of the second part:

Witnesseth: That the said S.C. Alexander, William Howser and John C. Schenck do covenant and agree with the said [[blank space]] to erect near the town of Charlotte on the land belonging to Biddle Institute on sites designated by the faculty two houses for Professor's quarters and six houses for dormitories for students and 522 panels of fencing in manner and form now specified and more particularly shown by plan and specifications accompanying.
Each house for Professor's quarters to be forty feet long and twenty-eight feet wide, two stories high, the lower storey ten feet and the upper nine feet high, four rooms below and four above with passage eight feet wide above and below except that the rear part of passage below shall be four feet to enlarge the size of dining room, one flight of stairs, two chimneys with one fire place above and one below and two flues for stoves in each, as shown in plan. The front rooms to be 16 ft x 16 ft above and below, the rear rooms 16ft x 12 ft, except dining room which will be 20ft x 12ft. outside measurement. Eighteen windows with 12 lights each 12 x 16 inches. Eleven doors, one closet under steps. The lumber to be of good merchantable hard pine and the work to be executed in approved workmanlike manner. The house to be placed on brick [[pollars?]] sixteen in number, the lowest two feet above the surface and all on good solid foundation at least 18 inches below surface
