The event of the season has 'appened. "Ike" has arrived, and the town is wearing a welcoming Smile. Py jiminy, more as once already yet.

Poor old Doleshal has finally gone to the hospital. I have my doubts as to whether he will get through. What with his previous sickness, this fever, his business worries and money affairs, it's enough to kill a regiment. It's too bad, - Doley is a hell of a nice chap, and everybody who knows him is his friend.

There's a damned flea disease among the horses in town, and now when one goes down to the point in a tikker one has to climb out at the ^[[Maala plain]] police station and hoof it to the Hedjuff Pass. As there are about thirty gharris in camp, and about half a dozen in Point, it usually happens that one has to keep on walking. From the cop station to Point, the khawajer is no better than the nigger in times like these. There are a few horseless gharris, manufactured by substituting the docile and ungainly camel ^[[for the pony,]] and they are doing a land-office [[strikeout]] business.
