Forbes and I took the daily local up to Mageras and back this afternoon. It was quite a novel thing to see the palms and the ^[[other]] tropical jiggers rush by the window, instead of Sapolio and Pile Cure ads, such as we see at home. The vegetation was bewildering, and some of the views from the higher ground were superb. I envy Stewart his trip to Nakuru, but I mean to see it myself before I go home, whether the firm stands for it or not. I'd rather not go through Stewart's seige to earn it, though.

That Besson may be a big fish here, but he's a cheap skate, when it comes down to the point, which is a bum pun but no joke. He had a lot of gendi in his place on which we bid 127 dollars. He took our bid over to Childs, and Childs gave him 127 1/4, and he accepted! Half a rupee on a frasila! About twelve rupees on twenty one tusks!

I don't think we'll be in any auction of his hereafter. We want his price, to take up or turn down. No more quarter dollar auctions here.
