[[preprinted]] Tuesday, February 23, 1909 [[/preprinted]] This afternoon Garrels and I took a drive a few miles along one of the inland roads. Every day I stay here I see something prettier than the day before, so it seems. We took a walk through one of the clove plantations, which was very interesting. The clove trees look much like our pear trees, only they have a white bark resembling birchbark. Saw some pineapple plants, and along the road some orange and lime trees. The profusion of vegetation here is astounding, - all the eye can see is green trees and plants. Quite a contrast to even the shambas in Mombasa. Mombasa could not be truly compared to this place for a minute. We were fairly comfortable for a little boat,- I slept on deck, and didn't mind Pembra channel at all. Gee whiz, but I am stuck on Zanzibar,- it certainly must be one of the prettiest tropical places on the entire map. Mombasa is barren compared to Zanzibar. I fancy it's healthier in Mombasa, but down in these regions there isn't much to choose in that line. "The Isle of Spice" for mine!
