The doggums is a-wooing these days. He came in the other day with his ear chewed and his legs bitten, but tonight Lake shouted me out of bed at eleven, and had the pup in tow. In the stress of the day's competition for the lady's favors, he'd got so thoroughly chawed that he [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] wasn't able to get home himself.

There's bloody little ivory coming down here now. My last three or four shipments have been mighty small, and today I sent off only seventeen on the "Eduard Woermann." It looked up to the last minute, as though we wouldn't have any, but by worrying old Tejpar until he was half crazy, we preserve our proud boast of sending ivory home on every German this year. A shipment every boat is more than our rivals have made, - they've made about four this year, - our score is twenty or more.
