[[preprinted]]Thursday, October 7, 1909[[/preprinted]] I guess it's up to me to give up hopes of that consular job. I sent in the application last March, and haven't heard a word from it yet. Gottschalk wrote me from Colombo this mail explaining the possible reason why it has not been acted upon. I sorter look upon his epistle as written to break the fall. Anyway, I guess I'm not due for the job, or I should have heard about it before. Bond memsahib writes me that Wallace has been appointed Consul-General at Copenhagen. I'm mighty glad, for he's an A1 chap and so is the memsahib. [[end page]] [[start page]] [[preprinted]]Friday, October 8, 1909[[/preprinted]] Small shipment on the "Khedive" today. Only 15 tusks. Of course it's over 2000 plunks, but after some of the shipments we've been making here, it seems but a mere waste of time. Vanderhoof made a star shipment here oncet. It was in the early part of '07, and consisted of 216 tusks. Rs 166,000. That's goin' some, wot?
