Went down to Biki Mau's tonight, for chikula. She's got a good piano down there, and if anyone asks her if she plays she very promptly answers "yes" in a manner calculated to inspire you that she's a real medicine-man at tickling the ivories, but I've never yet got her to play, and numerous persons have confided to me that they never have, nuther. She must be either a wizard or a frost at it, and I'm inclined to the belief it ain't the former.

I believe Weddell and Forbes and Dick were around tonight. Dick said he would have some vermouth before dinner, so I inquired whether it should be French or Italian. Dick expressed his preference, and it turned out we had neither. It always happens when we have company! It reminds me of the old farmer who complained that every time his [[strikeout]] ^[[horse-rake]] broke down it was always in [[strikeout]] hayin'-time!
