was several years ago when we were watching the U.S. Open on TV and it was being held at Jack's club at Columbus. Jack's name was given as one of the committee in charge and we strained to see him somewhere in the action but unsuccessfully.

[[underline]] Goodman Mfg. Co. [[/underline]]: Goodman was located in Chicago and was a general underground mining machinery manufacturer like Jeffrey. The senior Goodman member on the section roster was [[underline]] Bill Goodman[[/underline]], the company president. Bill was a short, plump, usually-smiling man, again very unassuming and easy to know. I grew very fond of Bill and his earnest, plodding way of doing his best to keep our activities strictly legal and above reproach. It was always Bill who made a speech of indoctrination to each incoming neophyte in which he very patiently traced the purposes and modes of procedure of NEMA and made very clear just what was legitimate and what not. Bill was the quiet, serious type and didn't go very far with the boys on the drinking but he was always friendly and pleasant to be with. At a meeting we had in Chicago, Bill entertained the gang by taking them to the Sadler's Wells Ballet and I had my first and only view of Margot Fonteyn in the flesh. Bill was a good influence. The other Goodman representative I think was [[underline]] Don Duncan [[/underline]] who I seem to recall was a financial man but just why he was with us I fail to remember. He was sufficiently overshadowed by Bill that I fail to recall much about him except that he was a nice guy.

[[underline]] Vulcan Iron Works [[/underline]]: I'm quite sure that Vulcan was a member company at the time I went into NEMA and I have a record of three of their representatives attending a meeting in 1943 but I think their attendance was quite desultory and that they soon dropped out. The three at the meeting in 1943 were Tom MacLachlan, Joe O'Brien and a guy named Stead who was their new sales VP and didn't impress me well. However, I already knew Tom and Joe and liked them, having worked with them when I was in WPB. But I'm sure Vulcan didn't cut much ice in NEMA during my tenure so I'm going to skip them here.

I think all of us looked forward to and enjoyed our meetings. When Westinghouse hosted, we usually met in Pittsburgh and in Chicago with Goodman. However, Jeffrey had a slight variation which was pleasant; we'd meet at Granville Inn in Granville, Ohio, near Columbus but a delightful little town and hotel as well as being the location of Dennison University. When GE hosted, we'd have them in Erie or sometimes at other Company locations like Schenectady where we'd show them the Research Lab or some other equally interesting display. And once a year we'd meet at the Homestead and bring along the ladies. Very nice.
