[[red underlined]] As Frank in his inimitable [[/red underlined]] way says, goddamned lucky we got out of WPB when we did - they might have had a congressional investigation of us if we'd been there when the storm broke. I am thrilled over the prospects now but very anxious to get my status decided and lined up and get to work in earnest.

En route to Erie, Pa.
Friday, July 24, 1942.
Spent the day at WPB working with [[red underlined]] Vic and Ed [[/red underlined]] on the report of [[red underlined]] locomotives on order, shipped, authorized, etc. [[/red underlined]] and was more and more required with the [[red underlined]] utter confusion of the place [[/red underlined]]. There are various sets of [[red underlined]] records [[/red underlined]] and reports not one of which seems to check any other, locomotives are classified wrong, duplicated, missing [[red underlined]] no one but Hanly can explain [[/red underlined]] many of the records and Hanly left today for a week's visit on the lakes; I don't blame him - he needs it. I am thoroughly convinced there is a man-sized job here to do and one that needs some attention badly and urgently. [[red underlined]] Talked to Whitey on phone [[/red underlined]] today at Schenectady and he says he will get the matter of my signing [[red underlined]] up with WPB cleared up today [[/red underlined]] and see me in [[red underlinedd]] Erie Sunday [[/red underlined]] - but I am fearing trouble over approval in spite of the fact [[red underlined]] Phil Reed told Stevenson [[/red underlined]] as would be okay to take me just as soon as he left town. [[red underlined]] Chet Lang [[/red underlined]] and Shreve[[guess]] and even C.E. Wilson are [[/red underlined]] bucking now.

Barbara Casey, Jack's wife is down for the weekend -- a very attractive blond girl - and we had a little drink together in the room before I left for the train. My trouble has been gradually disappearing all week as it has before in Washington; I am wondering if it can be Erie water that bothers me. I am very puzzled.
