[[red underline]] Vic [[/red underline]] got word today that his boy was taken to the hospital last night with a very serious infection in his throat and ears and [[red underline]] I suffered for him. [[/red underline]] His boy is eleven and a good looking youngster. Vic was on pins and needles all day but finally got a better report later so didn't go home tonight.
The evening consisted of the Mayflower Men's Bar and dinner at the Roosevelt with [[red underline]] Ed Becker [[/red underline]] Asst. Gen'l Purchasing Agent of the [[red underline]] Southern Pacific [[/red underline]] who Marshall says, always has "fishhooks in his pocket" although a swell guy otherwise. The little Hawaiian dancers barefooted and in grass skirts were good in the floor show and we had a swell photo taken of the crowd that I shall exhibit in Erie with much satisfaction. To bed at 1:30 tonight- better but way too late.[[right bracket]]

We have a new man, arrived yesterday, [[underline]] Matlock Tate [[/underline]] of Lima Locomotive who is to join the crowd on the material chasing end. So far he has had nothing to do except "look over" our shoulders which is very disconcerting. He is a rather severe looking, heavily set, middle aged man who almost never smiles but I guess [[underline]] he'll turn out okay. [[/underline]]

[[left bracket]] Was busy today with my correspondence, schedules, etc. and particularly a session with [[underline]] Major McLeod [[/underline]] on 1943 requirements. He now has the [[underline]] big steam [[/underline]] program but the [[underline]] small stuff [[/underline]] is still in the dark and I've got to wrangle something in the way of requirements soon - another big job. I'm convinced the demand for small locomotives will continue heavy but I have a problem to convince people of it and get a program set up accordingly.
