of cases. Capt. Baldwin of Ordinance made a play for locomotives he didn't know enough about to know in the slightest whether they were suitable or not. Poor old Vassar of Maritime was there and barely opened his mouth, got nothing and complained bitterly afterward - I told him he had to battle if he wanted anything. He said he was going to place the matter before some big shot in Maritime. It was all very interesting.

We went this evening to the [[underline]] General Steel suite [[/underline]] at the at the [[underline]] Mayflower [[/underline]] ($500 per month complete with two bedrooms, dining room, kitchen, bath and drawing room with fireplace) where Charlie Whitehead was host for some drinking. Later he, Marshall, Joe and I went to the [[underline]] Shoreham [[/underline]] for dinner. Charlie got pretty tight but I was assured by Marshall that Charlie was not really in form - when he is he throws bottles at anyone including his own companions and really raises hell. [[underline]] During the session at the suite [[/underline]] he warned us about watching our step (and very wisely) regarding our relations with our own companies. It was a hilarious session in spots, arguing about alloy steels etc. etc. The high point was when [[underline]] Vic Rennix [[/underline]] blurted out, "Well, when Mr. Stevenson decides whether silico-manganese is an alloy or not --" Ed Harley burst out, "Now listen, goddamnit! What does he know about it?"

It was a nice evening -- I drank sparingly and it was lovely at the [[underline]] Shoreham [[/underline]] under the stars and the music and attractive people around and friends and banter and good companionship. It is all quite an experience.
