[[underline]] ball game [[/underline]] - Washington vs the Athletics, the two bottom teams in the American League. Washington won 2-1 after a pitchers battle between [[underline]] Marchildon and Carrasquel, [[/underline]] the Venezuelan Senator. There was a three quarter hour [[underline]] surprise black-out [[/underline]] in the middle of the game which started with two Washington men on base and no outs and we had to wait 45 minutes to resume this crucial moment; Washington got one man in and thereby won the game. It was a sight to see all the [[underline]] matches flame [[/underline]] all over the stadium simultaneously when the "all clear" sounded and before the lights went on. And it was amazing how one's eyes gradually got accustomed to the darkness after a few minutes and the inky blackness became far from inky. [[underline]] There was much yelling, [[/underline]] fake all clear moos, singing, belly aching over the prolongation of the affair, razzing the players with "get in the army" etc. during the darkness. It was rather a novel experience but I have been in ^[[more]] comfortable places - the seat got awfully hard and I awfully sleepy after a while. I wonder what it would have been like if there had been a [[underline]] real raid [[/underline]] on.

Washington, D.C.
Wednesday, Aug. 17, '42.

This was a real day of work until 10:30 PM at the office getting up [[material]] material [[/underline]] requirements for the first half of [[underline]] 1943, [[/underline]] working on [[underline]] releases, letters, [[/underline]] phone calls, callers, etc. I begin to see why Carroll Hanly and Charlie Creasser used to work every night - I should to really get on top of this job. But we'll get there eventually and have a smooth running outfit on a businesslike basis.
