every matter that was brought up [[red underline]] Jim Knowlson, the [[/red underline]] regular chairman [[red underline]] was not there [[/red underline]] today and [[red underline]] Finlay presided [[/red underline]] Charlie Creasser says Finlay was a [[red underline]] blackboard maker in [[/red underline]] in a broker's office a year ago but however that may be, he certainly is a smooth individual and handled the meeting very well. We [[red underline]] left after our proposal was tabled until Monday. [[/red underline]] Going back in the cab, [[red underline]] Stevenson addressed me for the first time [[/red underline]] in my WPB career - made a remark about [[red underline]] having just read a letter [[/red underline]] "about four pages long from F.M. Craton dated April 4th" and wondered if it was a [[red underline]] "Dr. Jeykell and Mr Hyde affair." [[/red underline]] I told him it was written [[red underline]] "before the days"[[/red underline]]. He really seemed to be [[red underline]] trying to be friendly [[/red underline]] and facetious. Maybe I'll get to know the bird well yet.

Spent the rest of the day in a whirl of phone calls, letters, etc. but the big job was trying to get [[red underline]] AA2x [[/red underline]] through for diesel engines for the builders. Found the telegrams held up by [[red underline]] Gen. Cornell [[/red underline]] who said he had no authority to issue AA2x for anything but steel. So talked to [[red underline]] Hathsteimer of [[Cumminms]] [[/red underline]] for a half hour on phone and got him to extend his deadline a week to give us time to do something about raising the present A1A rating, now worthless. When I left the office [[red underline]] Stevenson, Cornell and Creasser [[/red underline]] were in session on the subject so I figured I'd done something to stir things up.

Met Earl Bill on the train as usual - he is down two days a week on government stuff now and I think is really beginning to make it click - about time. "Whitey" tells me he wants to put Jack Hause back in the engineering department to give him a better chance to escape the draft, and put Earl in temporary charge of the section - I don't know how it will pan out.
