ones on his books right now - the Navy could find them and others should be able to. I told him Kaiser had scoured the country and had no luck. Barton tells me almost any second hand equipment that the army doesn't take is practically worthless. We got a rise out of them by telling them locomotive production is bogging down for lack of interest and suitable priority help and engines in particular because the army and navy are grabbing all the engine building capacity. They allowed they would be glad to cooperate to alleviate that situation and I think a meeting will be held soon. As a matter of fact, I feel this locomotive situation is heading for a climax and there soon will be a beautiful explosion that will make for clearer sailing soon. The pot is beginning to boil slowly but surely - there are more and more signs every day of it. But I think the builders are going to have to go through hell before anything is done. The builders have led WPB in the past because WPB was too dumb or too hog tied in red tape to do a job. We should lead the builders and I believe we are gradually shaping around into a position to do it.

The party tonight was a good one -- all except the end when Ed Harley, very frank when somewhat tight, told Carroll Hanly in effect what a punk job he had done. I think Carroll got a trifle hot under the collar and I didn't blame him. I did my best to put an end to it, and finally did. So Carroll is leaving soon - his story down here would make a good book - maybe some day after the war I can write some memoirs about all that has happened. That is one reason I want to keep this record.
