the red tape of machine signatures, okays on SEC forms, etc. etc. before things can go out frequently make for a very inefficient operation, one that no business would tolerate for two minutes.

I'm in my room tonight and about to start on the general letter of instructions on L-97 again that Stevenson has blessed. Even if I finish it I wonder if there won't be some unexpected red tape to throttle it before it can go out.

Finished the instruction letter last night about 11:30 and felt very contented to have done so. With that job and the Porter mess off my hands I feel like weight has been lifted from me. [[underline]] Mat Tate is now struggling with Porter and has concluded it is a real mess; he is going out there shortly. [[/underline]]

I got all my release telegrams out today over the signature of Ernest Kauzler, the new Director General for Operations, succeeding Amory Houghton, resigned when his company, Corning Glass, was convicted on anti-trust charges. Kauzler, Ford vice-president and son-in-law of Henry Ford, does [[underlined]] not [[/underlined]] have the blessing of labor. Apparently no one can come in here with a perfectly clean slate in everyone's eyes.

[[open red bracket]] Made a pleasant discovery today. Sylvia Winnaker, the Bronx brunette who isn't supposed to be of much account and holding her job by virtue of civil service only, agreed to take some dictation from me although she said I would have to be patient with her because she hadn't taken any for several years. The results were excellent. After the first few letters, she began to catch on again and I got some beautifully typed and accurate letters. Then she told me she used to be a court stenographer! This may be the answer to the stenographic problem in our office, a serious one, because poor Dorothy simply can't handle us all by any stretch of the imagination.
