[[red bullet point]] This morning I had that tired feeling after about four hours sleep: still I think last evening was worth it for once. It was a perfect fall day, cool and clear and invigorating but not quite enough to make me feel peppy. I spent most of the day going through the red tape necessary to start the legalization of our schedule and material control sheets which should be approved by the [[red underline]] Census Bureau [[/red underline]]. After review by numerous agencies we hope they will be okayed because we've been using them and can't run our job without them.

[[red bullet point]] Tom Evans came in today and after an hour of haranguing with Charlie and Mat, they all went into Stevenson's office where, I later learned, Andrew really gave Tom a thorough and gentlemanly going over. Among other things he drew Tom out until he repeated the stupid accusations against me whereupon Stevenson really took him apart and said that as a member of his Industry Advisory Committee his remarks were shameful. They all felt that Tom left a chastened young man but he won't stay that way for long or I miss my guess. Mat has the entire problem in his hands and I think he now sees what has to be done to straighten it out although it comes as close to be an insoluble problem as any I ever saw. Tom is now reaping the harvest of his imprudent order taking and promises.

[[red bullet point]] Started work on a production chart today, taking GE as the guinea pig and when I showed it to Charlie, he was not only admiration but also incredulity. Evidently he has never done any such work and it looks amazing to him to see something clearly presented in chart form. I had schedule plotted side by side with shipments over time base, % realization, units ship in schedule, and cumulative schedule and shipments brightened up with colors and it looked pretty good - am going to set up something similar for all my small builders.
