weekend party down here for our wives and he would have his girl come down.  I'm going to try to arrange it.  He revealed that Charlie Whitehead is in a slight doghouse with Stevenson over going to the big foundry party at Hot Springs this weekend - it lasts about 5 days and is simply a brawl so I understand.  Joe has gone too under pressure according to Joe but Ed says he wouldn't have missed it.  I don't see how they get away with it at a time like this.

[[checkmark, bullet point]]  This noon they played the Beer Barrel Polka on the juke box - has new patriotic words - and it certainly carried me back to days in New Hampshire and Vermont when Connie Donovan and I were making our tour of New England and the world was still at peace largely.  There is nothing like music to do that.

Porter was in today for a long session with Mat and he thinks Porter is beginning to see the light although Rehorst reported that Pittsburgh Steel showed Evans copy of my letter to Booker confirming the understanding that they would place their order on Whitcomb for 2 - 65 tonners, and he wanted to talk to Charlie about it.  He described it as a letter telling Booker to cancel his order on Porter and place it on Whitcomb, which it did not say.  Charlie was tied up until evening so Rehorst never did see him.  Evans was reported to be in town today but he kept strictly away from us. [[red close bracket]]

[[x]] Vic arrived back in town today after 5 days in Chicago on a well deserved furlough and was immediately called off to spend the day in meetings with OCS over the new material plan, which seems to be well received.  He went with Stevenson to the Requirements Committee this afternoon but as they had only ten minutes to allow
