for 1943 where they would not have been otherwise. [[underlined]] Stevenson called me "Forie" once, [[/underlined]] and having patted me on the back this morning, I feel I must be getting on the approval list. He ripped the proposed report up and down the back, exhibiting a very keen mind and also some lack of manufacturing knowledge. He wants requirements tied in with this - something I thought should be done at the start but didn't have guts or something enough to say - and he objected to the inclusion of the Army steam requirements in the picture with ODT's request cut in two to make room for the Army - he said this was prejudging the case on our part and that is not our function - it should be shown both ways. The part that seemed rather silly was the request to include a statement as to what the building of the locomotives would mean to other programs and he took diesel engines as an example. It was pointed out that practically anything in the locomotive would detract from some other program or possible programs somewhere and it was an impossibility for us to go into such a discussion. However he wants it covered some way - god knows what we can put down.

[[x]] I turned down an invitation to play hearts tonight in Vic and Ed's rooms with the Baldwin gang, had dinner alone and spent the evening in my room. Wrote Willie and Mother - I wanted Willie to know how much I appreciated what a marvellous job she did last weekend and Mother to know I was sorry I couldn't visit with her at all. I understand from Willie, Mother is getting restless again and says she wants to go to Chautauqua for a while but of course she had no opportunity to bring it up while I was at home. It would be good for Willie if she did go for a short while
