Marsh and I became involved this evening in a party Perry Egbert threw at the Mayflower for some of the officers who are heading up the unit to go to Iran to handle the Alco 54-1000 HP jobs. Majors Marsh and McLeod were there and it turned out to be a veritable riot. I didn't realize what I was getting into at all expecting to have a quiet dinner at L'Escargot and be out at the hotel by 8:30. We had two balls downstairs alone and then were invited upstairs where the grape, corn, etc were flowing freely into more officers than I ever saw assembled together in one room. Major Marsh came within an ace of passing out but finally weathered the storm in the bedroom alone. Major McLeod was drinking copious rye highs for some time and then suddenly shifted to Cuba Libres apparently with no ill effects and he was simply wound up and uttering capers indiscriminately all over the place. At his insistence I imbibed a half a Cuba Libre and nearly went down - if I had taken it all I would have. We finally (what was left of the party - about 10) went to Harvey's for dinner about 10PM - it was poor judgment to let McLeod in public I thought - and the riot continued. I never wanted food so badly but had to wait another hour at Harvey's before it came, while the highs and Cuba Libres continued to flow. McLeod wound up his meal in this order - chocolate ice cream, fresh pineapple soaked with creme de menthe, two dozen raw oysters and several Cuba Libres - all this having been preceded by two large steaks! The table was a sight - the prize exhibition was a pair of coffee cups - one nearly empty, full of matches and butts, the other nearly full and floating matches and a french fried potato - the first resembled a toilet which had been flushed and was plugged
