Had word from Mat Tate today by phone that the Navy wants all five 25 tonners coming out in January. Talked to [[underlined]] Charlie [[/underlined]] too and told him it looks like I'm done Jan. 1st completely. He said, "What's the matter. Is Whitey getting militant?" I said, "No, he isn't. But Schenectady is." Charlie then said, "I wonder if we should put this up to Charlie Wilson." I told him according to the papers it appeared [[underlined]] Charlie might [[/underlined]] be on the verge of [[underlined]] resigning himself [[/underlined]] as a result of the struggle between Donald Nelson and the Army and Navy for full authority over production.

[[X]] We went to a dinner party at the Lamboins tonight - Gouldthorpes and Willie Davises there too, and played the current rage "Gin Rummy" afterwards. I understand from Gouldy that Jake is "2000 miles nearer home" now, whatever that may mean. I haven't heard from Jake for a year I believe but many others have - and I have written him. I don't know what the answer is. Maybe we haven't taken care of Ethel properly. I'm sorry about it.

Spent the morning at the office and Whitey and Henry agreed with my suggestion that [[underlined]] Ab Butler [[/underlined]] would be the best man we could pick for the Washington job. Whitey agreed he would start moving at once on it.

Tom [[underlined]] MacLachlan [[/underlined]] phoned [[underlined]] Henry [[/underlined]] to say he wants to transfer his order for 5-65 tonners for Raritan over to G.E. and if G.E. is willing he will propose it to WPB. It looks OK if the Army can agree on a suitable schedule G.E. can handle - but G.E. is slipping now and has a lot of 65 tonners ahead of them before they could take this on - May would be the earliest in my opinion unless the Army will allow something else to slip back.
