in spite of the volume of stuff Sylvia already had to get out today.

[[X]] I developed a [[underline]] sore throat [[/underline]] this morning from the icy wind last night and on the way to work today. Went to the nurse in the building and she painted my throat with tincture of metaphine - and it seemed to do the trick. They tell me they have such service in every government building.

[[checkmark]] [[underline]] Stevenson blew up over the Army's changing [[/underline]] its mind about requirements and today we dispatched releases to Vulcan and Davenport for 45 0-6-0's apiece for the second quarter in an effort to force the Army's hand.

[[checkmark]] Earl Bill called up to say [[underline]] Major Marsh [[/underline]] is now threatening to cancel the 36-80 ton and 14-65 ton locomotives at G.E. and replace them with his "all purpose" 65 ton design. If he tries to force that, there will be hell to pay and I'll probably be right in the middle of it. He wants G.E. to build this design of his for all 80 and 65 ton applications and abandon the standard designs - a ridiculous proposal because a locomotive of the quality of this thing of his is wholly unnecessary for the average industrial switching job. Marsh is now the Army procurement office and I can well imagine trouble ahead to keep him from exercising his power in some wild and undesirable ways. If he had his way, Porter would get all the Army steam business whether they can handle it or not. Major Mc Leod is with us on this matter and actually needles us on [[strikethrough]] the [[/strikethrough]] to combat Marsh and his policies.
