My dear Mr. and Mrs. Winterbotham:

In view of the interest you have manifested in our great Seurat landscape, "Le Crotoy", I feel that I should post you on a matter which has arisen since I spoke to you on the phone last week.

Before explaining, I should like to say that I hope you will not misinterpret these lines as "pressure salesmanship" for such is not at all my intention, but I am merely writing you this letter because I feel it my duty to inform you of the possibility of this picture being bought by someone else.

On Saturday afternoon we had the visit of one of the most important collectors in New York who was seriously interested in the Seurat, and he has asked that the picture be sent up to his house today. He is not a man who makes up his mind very quickly, and of course, one cannot possibly foresee whether he will buy the picture or not, but I should like to point out the fact that he is a very important collector and both his enthusiasm for the picture and his means render its acquisition more than possible.
