Andrew P. Mellon, Esq.,
1785 Massachusetts Ave.,
Washington, D. C.

Dear Mr. Mellon,

Remembering the pleasure I had in meeting you when you came into our galleries some while ago with Mr. Carman Messore, I am taking the liberty of writing you these few lines to call your attention to what is generally considered to be one of the finest 18th Century English paintings that has come to America in recent years.

It is another version of Lord Lansdowne's famous "Hope Nursing Love" and we are herewith enclosing you a photograph of it.

It not only has a very remarkable spontaneous quality, but it is undoubtedly both as regards composition and color, one of Reynold's masterpieces. The dress of the female figure is a brilliant yellow with a light blue sash; the draperies around the lower part of the body are in two shades of warm grayish-brown; the hair is of a beautiful auburn tint with a narrow light blue ribbon running through it, and the background which has a very charming little landscape of the left is of a beautiful redish-brown color.

This picture is now in our New York galleries, and I would very much like you to see it before we show it to anyone else, and if you feel it at all interests you, we would be very pleased to bring it out to Washington, without any obligation whatsoever to you, so that you could try it in your house.

Awaiting the favor of your reply.

Yours respectfully,

JACQUES SELIGMAHN & CO., Inc.
