New York City November 15, 1928 ^[[checkmark]] David E. Finley, Esq., Treasury Department, Washington, D,C. Dear Mr. Finley: I just returned from Europe a few days ago, having been kept on the other side longer than I expected, and it gives me great pleasure to communicate with you again, telling you that I have come back to the "Home Fires". As you will probably remember, we exchanged several letters regarding my visit to Washington last February, when I suggested to Mr. Mellon our very fine Metternich portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence. In fact, I heard in Europe, from friends of mine, that Mr. Mellon intended to see this picture, which unfortunately had been sent to Europe at that time, for exhibition. However, I shall have the portrait back in New York within the next few days, and I am very glad to say that we are able to make Mr. Mellon a different proposition, especially regarding the price of the painting.
