Dear Miss Davis:

It was pleasant to receive your letter of September 17th, and thus to hear from you.

Your question as to whether there is in France a National Portrait Gallery or Archives to which you might refer the lady from Alabama, is a difficult one to answer.

Actually, there is no National Portrait Gallery. There are, of course plenty of Libraries, such as the Bibliothèque Nationale (particularly the Print Department) and the different Archives where such information could be available - provided, I believe, that one went there and did the necessary digging oneself.

In my opinion the Château de Versailles, which in a way and to a certain extent, is also a Museum of French History, would be the one to appeal to. Whether they have a portrait of the Due de CHAULNES is perforce a moot question. Were you to recommend this procedure, may I suggest that the letter be addressed in the following manner (though I feel certain that you have had enough experience not to need such advice) :

Monsieur le Conservateur en Chef
Château de Versalles
Versailles ( S. & O.)

Trusting that the above will be of some help, and that I may have the pleasure of seeing you ere long, with kindest regards - and should Mr. Emerson be around, do not fail to give him my affectionate greetings,

GERMAIN SELIGMAN
