Dear Mr. Emerson:

If I am sending these personal lines to you, it is because I feel certain that it is thanks to you that I was given the great privilege of receiving the magnificent publication "The Four Gospels and The Acts of the Apostles".

It is, indeed, a superb achievement which links so beautifully once more art and religion and is so much in keeping with the great tradition established by the Samuel H. Kress Foundation. And this, again, reverts to you, for you have been right along if not the, at least one, of the most active sponsors of this spiritual and [[strikethru]] ethical [[\strikethru]] ^[[aesthetic]] guidance. This is just to tell you how much I appreciate this gift which complements the other superb volume of "Signs and Symbols in Christian Art".

I was also presented this summer with a copy of the studies dedicated to our dear and remarkable friend Dr. William E. Suida - a volume which by numerous scholarly works is worthy of the man whose whole life has been thus consecrated to the triumph of art.

With renewed appreciation and best personal regards,

Sincerely yours,

Germain Seligman
