JEAN GOUJON, Atelier of

[[underlined] "MERCURY" [[/underlined]

Height: 66" ca. 1550

Wood, covered with copper, traces of gold leaf. The wings, hands, and toes are of lead.

Mercury is show in the traditional running post of the messenger, resting lightly no his left leg; his right leg is extended back in opposition to his raised right arm. He is unclad except for a drape around his shoulders and a round winged helmet beneath which shows a short crop of curled hair. Wings protrude from his heels. His sturdy body shows potential vigor which is here reserved as he seems to move effortlessly, gazing down, apparently absorbed in his own thoughts.

The general elegance of the statue, the curving of the back, the classical profile, and the mythological subject itself are characteristic of elements of the French Renaissance.
