#8071 DESJARDINS, Marin 1640-1694

"[[underlined]]LOUIS XIV[[/underlined]]"

White marble: 38-1/2".

Signed and dated: "DES JARDINS, 1675".

A hite marble figure of the young monarch as Hercules in regal pose, his right leg thrust forward, his left hand places lightly on his hip, palm upward; the left arm extending slightly away from the figure is resting on a mace which points downward on the base.

The statue was executed in 1675 when the King was in his '30s. This was the most glorious epoch of his reign, when he has been crowned by victories which were to win him the name of Louis the Great.

It would seem, and as indicated by Professor Louis Reau in his writings on this statue (see bibliography following), that this statue was commissioned by Marechal Duc de la Feuillade, a wealthy courtier at the court of Versailles, and the original protector of Desjardins.
