The Dramatic Club

The Wiley College Dramatic Club has successfully appeared in the limelight during the school year 1930-31, under the direction of Professor D. M. Pierson. The Dramatic club has quite a record of events that occurred in former years and this program of achievements is continuing through the present. The play "Damon and Pythias," presented in the Wiley Chapel, January 16, attained no small degree of merit. Over a breathless audience, captivated by the skillful depiction of life, a spell was cast which was not lifted until the curtain was lowered for the last time. This presentation was indeed one which showed a carefully selected and well trained cast.

Among the notable scenes were: the scene portraying Pythias, ably acted by Bertram Prater, making the noble pledge of his life in security for the return of his friend, Damon,(Nolan Anderson) and remaining true to his trust although sorely tempted to flee imprisonment by his betrothed although the devoted and charming Calanthe, (Henrietta Bell) aided by the disguised tyrant (J.O. Williams): the scene of Greek maidens entertaining the bride-to-be Calanthe with graceful, symbolic dances; the scene in which Damon bids final farewell to his grief-stricken wife Hermione (Clotee Wallis) and his little child (Lenora Forest); and the scene depicting the hysterical madness of Damon, who despite his servant's mistaken kindly attempt to prevent his return for his execution, finds he has returned just in the nick of time to redeem his friend Pythias' pledge of his own life. The presentation of the play throughout was indeed one which showed a carefully selected and well trained cast.

Again on May 22, Wiley dramatic lovers were swept away, this time on the wings of mystery, deep and enchanting, during the performance of "The House of Flashing the Light" This play offered entertainment and thrills that could hardly be surpassed.
