Baseball

March 1, 1930, the athletic field of the Wildcats was busy with activity again.  It was an amusing sight to see the rookies swing at one of Sam "Lanky" Thompson's fast ones.

We had lost through graduation Reynolds, catcher; Marion Smith, pitcher; Faine, an outfielder; and Bennet, second baseman.  It was not an easy job replacing veterans like these.  Therefore, we began the season expecting to do very little in the flag race.  After several weeks of training the Wildcats journeyed south to play Prairie View and Sam Huston College.  The split a two game series with Prairie View and won a two game series from Sam Houston.  The victories on that trip gave us courage, and we split the next series with the conference champs, Texas College.  We needed to win two games from Bishop to have a chance at the shield.  Sam Thompson pitched a great game the first day and won 11-4.  The second string pitcher, Ben Woodfork, went five innings until his sore arm went bad.  Then Thompson had to resume duty.  He really pitched, but a pop fly, which was allowed to fall safe in the infield, and a misjudged line drive, which should have been easily caught, gave the game to Bishop 7-6.  This all happened in the last inning and after two men were out.

We had three men to stand out in performance in every game.  They were Sam Thompson, Homer Murray, captain, and Dan Calhoun.  Too much can not be said of Thompson because he was the Iron Man.  He pitched some
