Wiley's Needs

A College which has no needs is one in which the seeds of decay have sprouted. Because of its having out-distanced so many of the Colleges for Negro Youth, Wiley College has been thought of by many people as a College without need. On the other hand, those who are close to the situation appreciate, more or less, the degree to which it is possible to forget just how much has been accomplished because of the tendency to over emphasize the needs of the College.

It is indeed important that the $600,000 Endowment Drive be a successful one in order that in addition to the tuition fees, World Service Money and small annual gifts, there may be a permanent source of income. This income will make it possible to fill other needs as: Doctors of Philosophy as heads of departments, the addition of Library books and natural science and social science equipment and supplies. Also it is important that the system of scholarships be perfected so that more deserving high school graduates may be assisted in their efforts to take advantage of the superior opportunities afforded by the College.

The building program of the College has received many high compliments. In some respects the most immediate need is a moderate dormitory for men, similar to the palatial Dogan Hall. As soon as this has been arranged for it will be necessary to add another dormitory unit for girls. The intensive work of the College makes it imperative that not only the program of out door exercise be expanded, but also that a modern gymnasium be erected. A third need is a Demonstration High School that is separate from the College, but under the direct control of the Wiley College Department of Education, although at present the practice teaching is being taken care of by giving the students the benefit of the supervision of experienced teachers in a regular school system, there will be advantages in their not having to walk farther than across the street and of their having the benefit of a closer over-sight of the Department of Education in the application of their theory. Other building needs include: a natural science building, a social science building and a Church edifice that may be used by the citizens of this section as well as the College.
