A Fine Tribute to Wiley College

The Marshall Chamber of Commerce is sending a ringing message to the white citizens of Marshall relative to the campaign for $25,000.00 in the city. In the letter transmitting the message the Committee said:

"We are pleased to enclose herewith the endorsement by the Chamber of Commerce of Marshall, Texas, of the project which you have in hand for raising an endowment for the Wiley College.

"The work which this college has done among the Negroes of the Southwest, for many years past, has been most gratifying and we feel that the accomplishments of this college have made it the outstanding institution West of the Mississippi, for the advancement of education of the Negro race. It has been favored with competent direction and leadership......."

The message itself, signed by the President of the Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Knox Lee, said in part:

"The Rockefeller Foundation has offered them (Wiley) Three Hundred Thousand Dollars toward a permanent endowment, conditioned upon their raising an equal amount by December 1, 1930. The white citizens of Marshall are requested to subscribe Twenty Thousand Dollars of this amount. This is the first time that this school has asked for our assistance. We hope that this plea will receive earnest consideration."
