EVENTS OF THE YEAR

(Continued from page 61)

Lonnie Jackson, the leading male, was indeed excellent. It furnished an hour of high-class entertainment.

Seemingly there was no end to examinations. January twenty-third, semi-quarterly examinations for the second quarter were given by an exacting crew under the direction of "First-mate Daniel."

For the last time the "good mariners" paid homage to the heroes of the gridiron. First a program in the chapel, at which time Attorney Nabrit of Houston held the audience spellbound with his discourse on "Why Football?" Then came the presentation of the Conference trophy, a silver football, to Captain Franklin. After expressing a few words of thanks Captain Franklin presented captain-elect Johnson, the wonder quarter-back of the Wildcat team. Following this program the football team and guests enjoyed a prom in the Refectory.

February nineteenth the harbor presented a beautiful spectacle when many small vessels steamed out to the "Good Ship Wiley" for the meeting of the conference of Presidents and Principals of the Educational Institutions of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The Presidents of Meharry, Morgan, Gammon, Clark, Samuel Huston, and Philander Smith were among those present. The interesting lectures, especially those by President Mullowney of Meharry, President Davage of Clark, and President Clapp of Gammon Theological Seminary were enjoyed by all.

Beginning February twenty-third and continuing through February twenty-seventh, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority observed "Finer Womanhood Week" by giving very inspiring programs. Sixty dollars was given by the Wiley Endowment Fund. The program was a worthy example of what is being done by Greek-letter organizations and also the beginning of the series of programs of the Sororities and Fraternities. "Bigger and Better Business" sponsored by Phi Beta Sigma, "Invest in Education" by Delta Sigma Theta, "Go to High School Go to College" by Alpha Phi Alpha, and "Vocational Guidance" by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. All of which appear on the calendar for the spring season of the trip.

The Williams' Singers furnished an evening of pleasant entertainment February twenty-seventh. But its memory was soon obliterated by the quarterly examinations on the fourth and fifth of March. After which there were many no doubt who could look back over a profitable six months jorney, but there were still few who lamented the past and dreaded the three remaining months of the voyage.

"Crab Week", the last week in March when Freshmen rule, ending in college night and seniors don the caps and gowns for the first time: the Passing Revue of Alpha Kappa Alpha, an annual affair; the presentation of Misses Jean Benson and Mildred Portis in vocal and piano recitals; Picnic Day with the crowning of "Miss Wiley," and a baseball game with Bishop; the Junior-Senior Prom; baseball games with Prairie View and other teams; and, finally, examinations followed by the Commencement exercises and another saying farewell [[em dash]] are events that we can predict with a reasonable amount of certainty will fill the spring quarter calendar. And June second, "Captain Dogan" steers the vessel into port; passengers disembark boarding Specials for the "Old Home Town." June 3rd the sun rises on a deserted but memory laden ship [[em dash]] "WILEY."
